Playing of heartstrings

The artiste opening musical proceeding at the India Week is one other than Dr. Mustafa Raza who hails form a family of musical genius. His grandfather Ustad Chajju Khan was a court musician of what was then known as Palampur state and his father Ustad Ahmed Raza Khan is an International by renewed veena player with many awards to his credit befogging to the beenkar gharana of Moradabad and Patiala, Dr Raza received his initials training in Indian Classical music form his talented father.

The veena or been the instrument that Dr Raza playas has a special place in the history of India music. Thoughtits present form was designed the 17th century, the origin of veena is believed to go back to 2000 years. Making it the oldest instrument in Indian classical music, Known by different names such as 'tantra' 'veena' raghnath veena and 'batta been' it is most popular known as vichitra (unique) veena. The instrument has four main strings three sides strings with two chikaries and 15 sympathetic strings giving it a range of four ovtaves. The veena is the only pluked instrument, which is capable of reproducing the finder nuances of the human voice. Its unqieness lies in the sounds it produces for they are considered to be purest in the musical world and the foundation for all arts. Playing a musical note on this instrument has been linkened to having a vision of God. Os it comes as no surprise when Dr. Raza, who is India's most recognised vichitra veena player say that his music brings peace to heart and mind.
